Striated bands in a transverse ridge (in which kinetodesmal fibers are lacking) at high magnification. The longer band has seven stripes rather than five as in the shorter band. This suggests three regions of overlap rather than two. The filaments may have a set length so that for longer distances two sets of overlapping filaments may be needed to span the distance between the filaments arising from the epiplasm. TEM taken on 2/21/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 47,100X. Bar = 0.1µm.
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis. There is a high resolution version of this image in the library (CIL:39307) which is available for quantitative analysis. Additional information available at (http://www5.pbrc.hawaii.edu/allen/).
