Description

This image illustrates the frustule (silica cell wall) of a warm-water marine diatom, Podocystis spathulata. Diatoms are aquatic, single-celled algae which possess a hard shell. The shapes vary but all diatoms are non-motile, floating, photosynthetic organisms known as phytoplankton. More diatom images are available as CIL:39032, 39034, and 39035.
